Although never again able to use his legs fully, by 1928, Roosevelt regained enough physical and emotional strength to return to his great passion, politics. After supporting Al Smith for the presidency at the National Democratic Convention, Roosevelt, at Smith’s behest, accepted the nomination for governor of New York, the position Smith was vacating. Roosevelt’s success in the governorship brought him overwhelming reelection in 1930 and the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1932. His public obligations from 1929 to 1933 limited his visits to Warm Springs to about a month each year.

He graduated with honors from Bainbridge High School in his hometown Bainbridge, Georgia, and then continued his education at Georgia Southwestern State University. Ashley’s interest in interpretation started with an internship at Andersonvillle NHS and a seasonal position at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt NHS in Hyde Park, NY. Ashley began his career with PRHS at New Echota in 1997 as the interpretive ranger.

The Little White House was originally approached from the cottage area of the rehabilitation center via an unpaved road; it was more secluded than it is today. It was at the Little White House, while sitting for his portrait, where Roosevelt suffered a stroke in April 1945 and died shortly after. Roosevelt was only able to go to Warm Springs for infrequent short visits during World War II. He returned to Warm Springs for the last time near the end of the war in March of 1945. Just back from the Yalta Conference, he planned to work on the address with which he would open the United Nations Conference.
Because Roosevelt was nationally prominent, his visit assured publicity for Warm Springs. By his return in 1925, other patients were coming in the hope of a cure. In 1926, he bought the resort property and 1,200 acres from George Peabody for some $200,000. Seeking medical advice and contributions from his friends, he organized the nonprofit Warms Springs Foundation in 1927 turning property over to the foundation.
During his time in Key West, the president spent time with family, friends, and advisors, but he also utilized the advanced communication system installed at the house to keep in touch with his top advisors in Washington. The Marshall Plan is another significant achievement of Truman’s presidency. It was designed to provide economic assistance to Western Europe, helping to rebuild after the devastation of World War II. The plan was a crucial part of America’s recovery and helped to maintain political stability across Europe. The Marshall Plan demonstrated Truman’s commitment to international leadership and set the stage for America’s continued involvement in global events.

Prior to becoming President, Truman was a successful Missouri politician, serving as a county judge, US Senator, and Vice President under Roosevelt. Harry S. Truman was an important president who helped shepherd America through a tumultuous period in its history.

The Little White House was also used when President John F. Kennedy chose it as his Winter White House in 1961. The president spent a whopping 45 days in the House before he had to attend to important matters in Washington. The Marshall Plan was a comprehensive plan to help rebuild the economies of Europe, which had been devastated by World War II. The plan was proposed by Secretary of State George Marshall in 1947 during President Truman’s presidency.

Key West was an integral part of anti submarine warfare throughout the Cold War period from 1946 to 1974 with numerous American and Allied sailors trained here. The first cottage that Roosevelt had built in 1927 was quaint and comfortable but small. He built it before he reentered politics and, as governor of New York, he needed more room for guests, family, and official business. By the time he became president himself, he’d married distant relative Eleanor and been diagnosed with polio. When he came down to Warm Springs, his neighbors saw him as just another person, not the leader of the free world. Among the more interesting displays are the canes that have been sent from all over the world in honor of him.
The institute still treats those with spinal cord and other debilitating injuries at the former Meriwether Inn. Downtown you’ll see the original hotel in town where the Roosevelts first stayed as well as a number of shops and restaurants.
